Caspersen Beach {Vaca Day 3}

[box type=”note”]Don’t miss Day 1 or Day 2 of our trip to Florida![/box]

On Day 3 of our trip, we made a stop at First Watch for brunch and ventured south to Venice, FL.  I wanted to visit Caspersen beach, an undeveloped beach famous for pre-historic shark teeth.  It was a beautiful beach with large rocks and turquoise blue waters, but not a great swimming beach.  Everyone there was on a mission: to find shark teeth! We didn’t bring any nets like most people had to scoop up sand and search through it for the teeth.  However, we used our hands and still managed to find three small teeth.  I was happy with that!  We also saw dolphins again!

{Florida posts continued.}

After sleeping in on Saturday morning (July 17th), Corey, Christy, Ryan, and I got ready for the beach.  They were taking us to one of their favorite local beaches, Playalinda, along the Cape Canaveral National Seashore.  Playalinda is Spanish for “Pretty Beach” and the name fits it quite well!

First, they took us on a short nature drive since it was on the way there.  It was really nice to see what Florida looks like without any human disturbance, even though we didn’t see many exotic birds.  Wrong time of the year for that.

Then we got out to smell the wildflowers…

Okay, that’s not really why we got out.  But we found some pretty ones while we were looking for alligators.  To our disappointment, we did not spot any alligators that day.  They were hiding from the hot mid-day sun.  Can you blame them?

However, we did find a raccoon …. in the trash can!!  Ryan saved its life.

Then it was off to Playalinda Beach for the day.  It is the southern-most beach of a 24 mile stretch of undeveloped beaches… there’s nothing but sand dunes, waves, wildlife, and sunshine… oh and a few toilets (no running water) for your convenience.   There is also a NASA launch pad nearby incase you weren’t aware we are talking about the Space Coast.

It was truly a gem of a beach.

We enjoyed a day of boogie boarding, which sure took a lot of energy to fight the rough waves and currents.  Lots of fun, nonetheless!

Videos coming soon, including shots where I hit the waves at the wrong time!  :)

I’m hesitant to post this next picture, because the waves were causing some major wardrobe malfunctions.  I would recommend a one piece for boogie boarding.  I think it’s one of those things that tourists discover while locals sit back and laugh.

I hated to leave such a beautiful beach.  Oh, who am I kidding, I hated to leave the state of Florida…

Look at that view!!  Literally in the middle of no where.  That’s what makes it so great!

Before leaving, we made a quick stop at lot #13. Words of the wise: That ordinance on the sign is not enforced.

After a fun day in the sun, we went back home and ate spaghetti for dinner, got some more ice cream at Bruster’s, and rented the movie “Shutter Island.”  At first I was firmly against watching it, as I thought it would be too scary, but after we realized there weren’t many good movies to choose from, I gave in.  And I even watched it again a few weeks later!   Although a bit creepy, it is a good one.

Double Date Night in FL

{Florida posts continued… To catch up start here.}

On Friday (July 16th), Ryan helped Christian bring his drums back to life.  His poor drum set had been in pieces stored in a big box for quite some time.  Ryan saved the day and Christian, the aspiring drummer, loved it!  They played drums together and after that, Christian did not want to put his drum sticks down!  Amelia might follow in their footsteps too, because she seemed to enjoy herself.  On the other hand, Christy and I had to find some tylenol, ha!  I think he will replace Ryan in the drumming world once Ryan retires.  Well, that is, IF Ryan retires.  :)

Later that afternoon, we rode our bikes over to Christy’s friend’s to swim in their pool.  I already posted those underwater pictures on this post.

The kiddos, Christian and Amelia, left from the pool to their Dad’s for the weekend.  I was sad to see them go, but it was also great to be able to have some time for a night out and kid-free moments.  We went home and got ready for the evening’s double date!

We drove to Orlando to pick up Christy’s boyfriend, Corey, and then went to Kobe Japanese Steakhouse where we had reservations.  It was my very first time dining at a Japanese restaurant and I LOVED it!  Thanks Christy for the great suggestion and for buying our meal!

Of course, we sat at a Chef table so we could have the full experience.

The food was soo delicious!  But oh so filling.  After the soup, salad, veggies, noodles, rice, and chicken… I had a full plate to take home with me.  It’s kind of embarrassing how tiny my stomach is when everyone else next to me can clear their plate!

After dinner was the surprise we’d been waiting for!  We headed over to a convention center where IYC (International Youth Convention) was taking place and also where John Tibbs was playing!  He had no idea that we were also in Florida and were coming to surprise him.  He was pretty shocked, but definitely excited that we were there!  We were more than happy to be there to support him and hear him sing in the Sunshine State.  Christy is the newest John Tibbs fan after I let her listen to a few of his songs.. she was immediately hooked!  She bought herself a copy of Origins and got it signed by John that night.

Madison Park Church from Anderson was there with shirts that said “I know John Tibbs” so John had a shirt that said “I know them” and John’s fiancee had a shirt that said “I’m engaged to John Tibbs.”  Too cute!

Definitely not the best lighting for pictures, but we had to get some anyway!

Ryan and Corey accidentally matched with blue shirts and khaki shorts.  Haha!

Christy and I did not coordinate our colors but did decide to wear dresses!

On our way back to Titusville, our curiosity got the best of us and we had to check out this huge McDonald’s that claimed to be “The World’s Largest.”  As soon as I walked inside, I had the weirdest deja vu moment.  Even though I had never been into a McD’s like that, I remembered a dream that took place in a very similar one.  Thankfully, I didn’t get lost like I did in my dream so it wasn’t a premonition.

Florida 2010  7023

This McDonald’s served other things besides the normal Big Macs and french fries… Corey said they even served beer.

Florida 2010  7025

The top level had a play-place and arcade games, where Christy played a free game of skee ball.

Florida 2010  7033

I later googled this McDonald’s to see if it really was the World’s Largest… I think it means the World’s Largest Entertainment McD’s.  There’s competition with one in Oklahoma.

It was a late night (didn’t get home ’til about 1 or 2 AM) and a GREAT night!  Definitely won’t forget the fun time we had together.
